The Board of Fire and Police Commissioners for the City of Burbank is now accepting applications for the position of: Firefighter/Paramedic

 

 

Testing is being conducted for 6 IMMEDIATE new hires and to establish an Eligibility List for future hiring needs.

 

Burbank is located in Cook County, at the southwest edge of the city of Chicago.  Conveniently located only 12 miles southwest of the Loop, and bordered by Oak Lawn, Bridgeview and Bedford Park makes living in Burbank a great place to raise a family or establish a business.

The goal of the Burbank Fire Department is to save lives and property and to prevent the citizens of Burbank from further danger by natural or man-made disaster and accidents.

The Fire Department is manned 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, with an average shift of 9 full-time firefighter and paramedics.  Shifts consist of 24 hours on duty followed by 48 hours off.  Burbank Fire is a young, aggressive department that is known for its rigorous and proactive approach to fire suppression and emergency response. The Burbank Fire Department responded to over 40 structure fires last year. Average call volume ranges between 4500-4700 incidents per year.  Manning consists of 2 Officers, 2 Engineers, and 4-6 Firefighter/Paramedics, depending on staffing.  The Department fleet consists of three Engines, one Quint, one Technical Rescue Squad, four Advance Life Support Ambulances (paramedic staffed), two Service Vehicles, and three Command Vehicles. We will also be taking delivery of a Rosenbauer Commander EXT Rescue Pumper in October 2024.

 

Starting Salary:  $78,274.00

 


Job Requirements:

 

 

You must meet the minimum requirements:

 

  • Citizenship:  Must be a U.S. Citizen.

  • Driver’s License:  Must possess a valid Driver’s License at the time of application with the ability to obtain an Illinois Driver’s License upon time of hire.

  • Age Requirement:  Applicants MUST have attained their 20th birthday by the last date for filing applications (11/20/24).  Must be 21 at time of job offer.  Applicants must be under the age of 35 years at the time of testing (12/7/24) unless exempt by State Statute 65 IL 5/10-2. 1-6 which provides, in part, that the age limitation does not apply to any person previously employed as a firefighter in a regularly constituted fire department of any municipality in Illinois.

    Character:  Must have no felony convictions and be of good moral character as described in State Statute 65 IL 5/10-2.1-6.

    Education:  Must have proof of High School Diploma, GED Certificate or High School Proficiency Statement.

  • Certification and Training:  Must be certified as Basic Operations Firefighter or Equivalent (FF2) by Illinois State Fire Marshal’s Office at time of application and MUST be a Certified Paramedic (EMT-P) by the State of Illinois (or have National certification) at the time of job offer.

  • Residence:  The City of Burbank does not have a residency requirement at this time.

  • CPAT Card:  Not required to apply, but must possess a valid Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT) Certification with Ladder Climb Exercise at the time of conditional offer of employment.

Preference Points

 

Preference points for applicants shall be provided by the City of Burbank for:

  • Veteran Preference (5 Points)

1 year of active duty and honorable discharge, or, if not yet discharged, is a member on inactive or active reserve duty and has been deployed or on active duty training for a one year period (in this instance training is considered active duty and is indicated on Military Service Record as such).

  • Experience Preference Points A (5 Points)

Fulltime experience, and currently employed as a fulltime Firefighter / Paramedic for a municipality or fire protection district.  A letter from the department verifying service is required.

  • Experience Preference Points B ( 5 Points)

Paid-On-Call, Certified Firefighter Experience with the City of Burbank. An Applicant will be awarded 5 points for current employment with the City of Burbank as a paid-on-call or part-time Firefighter II/Basic Operations Firefighter, State of Illinois or a nationally licensed EMT-B or EMT-P, or any combination of these for the City of Burbank.  Copies of certifications and a letter from the department verifying service is required.
