The Board of Fire and Police Commissions for the City of Markham is now accepting applications for the position of: Police Officer
Certified officers are encouraged to apply and may be credited up to 4 years on the pay step scale ($81,681.34) based on previous experience
Testing is being conducted for an immediate need to hire and to establish an eligibility list for future hiring needs.
The City of Markham Police Department is a full-service police department. The dedicated men and women of the Markham Police Department serve twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week, all year long. Currently, the Markham Police Department consists of the Administration Division, Investigations Division, Tactical Unit, K-9 Division, Records Division, and Crime Free Housing Division. The Markham Police Department has current special assignments to the South Suburban Emergency Response Team (SSERT), Accident Reconstruction (SMART), ILEAS and a Task Force Officer (TFO) to a Federal Agency. Patrol schedule is 12-Hour shifts with every other weekend off. No residency requirements.
Competitive Blue Cross/Blue Shield Medical, Dental and Vision Insurance. Depending on years of service you can earn 80-160hrs of vacation time and 64-96hrs of sick time. You will also earn two (2) personal days and eleven (11) holidays per fiscal year
Starting Salary: $69,125.88 ($79,494.76 after 1 year)
($106,472.24 after 7 years)
Job Requirements:
You must meet the minimum requirements:

Citizenship: Must be a U.S. Citizen or legally authorized to work in the U.S. who produces evidence of intention to become a U.S. Citizen.

Driver’s license: Must have a valid Driver’s License.

Age Requirements: Applicants shall be under 35 years of age, at the time of application (5/27/26) and at such time as the final eligibility list is posted, unless they have been certified and employed as a Full-Time Police Officer in a regularly constituted police department for a municipality in the United States or are otherwise exempt from such age limitation as provide in Section 5/10-2/1-6 of the Fire and Police Commissioner’s Act. Applicants must be at least 20 years of age at time of test (6/13/26) and 21 years of age at the time of appointment.

Education: Must have a High School Diploma or equivalent (GED).

Character: Must not have committed any felony, certain misdemeanors, or crimes involving moral turpitude and be of good moral character pursuant to 50 ILCS 705/6.

Testing: Must be able to participate and successfully complete all stages of the testing process.

P.O.W.E.R. Card: Must possess a valid P.O.W.E.R. Card at the time of written examination from a certified testing agency. P.O.W.E.R. Cards must be dated between 6/13/25 and time of test on 6/13/26. P.O.W.E.R. Card is not required for full-time or pat-time Illinois Certified Police Officers.
